Though a gun-shaped pneumatic wrench is the most wide-spread type, there are other more compact models designed for use in tight hard-to-reach spots. While gun-shaped tools feature ergonomic grip, compact models may be less convenient to operate due to their rod-shaped construction. Air-powered impact wrenches have a range of advantages over electric tools. They are more compact and lightweight, thus being perfectly suited for long-hour work with minimal user’s exertion. The weight of the most commonly used models ranges from 1 lbs for small and up to 30 lbs for heavy duty tools.
Shopping for an air impact wrench, always consider the drive size the tool features. It is the square drive which is a point where the tool is attached to the body of the impact wrench. The most popular impact wrenches feature 3/8", 3/4", 1/4", 1/2", 1" and 6" drive sizes. The larger the drive size, the bigger the torque. Air impact wrenches provide excellent control by featuring a speed regulator as well as a forward and reverse direction switch to easily move from tightening to untightening actions. The speed regulator allows varying the impact rate that usually ranges from 1000 RPM and up to 12000 RPM for super duty models.
Impact wrenches use the so-called hammering power. When the power is switched on, an internal "hammer" inside the tool strikes the anvil connected to the square drive on the end of the wrench. This forces the tool connected to the air drive to turn. An impact wrench provides high torque at low speed and its hammering action allows you to get rid of rust or other things that keep fasteners stuck. An air impact wrench is traditionally a gun-shaped tool that takes its power from a source of pressurized air. The working pressure of the average impact wrench is 90 PSI, while the maximum torque is about 2000 lb-ft.
