Pneumatic sanders and polishers are hand-held tools powered by compressed air. Through an inlet located in the tool’s handle, the sander/ polisher is connected to the pressurized air source with flexible tubes. The pressure required for operating most air sanders and polishers is 90 PSI. Adjustable power regulators allow to match the speed to the specific job. Low speed sanders offer speed range from 1,500 to 2,000 RMP, while larger models can provide up to 15,000 MPH capacity. Functioning without a bulky engine, air sanders and polishers feature low noise and vibration levels, being compact and lightweight.
Sanders and polishers use disk or belt attachments for a sanding or polishing effect. Sanders use abrasive sanding paper attachments, while polishers are outfitted with smooth fabric pads. Perfectly suited for working on wood, fiberglass, and metal, sanders and polishers are irreplaceable when you need to prepare surfaces for painting, remove thick layers of material, or give the surface a fine finish. Hand-held sanders will work well on flat and concave surfaces, corners, and edges alike. According to the way the sandpaper is moved across the surface, there are orbital, random orbital, belt, and disk sanders.
Belt sanders function by rotating a band of continuous abrasive material, while disk sanders work by moving the flat abrasive disk in a circular pattern. The sizes of abrasive disks available on the market usually range from 2” up to 10”, while abrasive belts come in sizes from 1/2" x 18” to 3/8” x 13”. Orbital sanders send vibrations in small circles and are used for fine sanding or when working with small surfaces. Random orbit sanders spin the abrasive disk moving it in an ellipse to provide a scratch-free and swirl-free finish. Some sanders offer self-vacuuming feature, outfitted with an integrated dust collector for easier clean-up.
