Chain Wrenches

Wrenches constitute a large family of tools whose purpose is to tighten or loosen various types of fasteners. Bolts, nuts, and other fasteners are widely used in countless applications, and luckily, there is a wrench for every case. Some for them are meant for more general use, others are more specialized. Among the latter, chain wrenches are highly specialized and effective tools used to grip pipes or other objects having relatively large diameters. They can also be utilized for replacing oil filters that are sometimes difficult to rotate by hand. Actually, they are similar to strap wrenches but have a tougher construction and, in some cases, they can even scratch the surfaces if not properly used.

Typically, such a tool consists of a lever connected to an adjustable chain that wraps the pipe and is locked to the head of the lever. The chain is designed to deliver traction in both directions while the head of the lever is notched to improve the grip. Chains can be easily replaced, but proper maintenance increases their lifespan and prevents malfunctioning. For example, their links should be cleaned from dirt and lubricated.
