A cross-peen hammer is one of the oldest forging tools: its shape is often associated with the image of a blacksmith hitting a piece of metal on the anvil in a smoking forge. Less literately, a cross-peen hammer is a variant of the ball-peen one where the ball-shaped end is superseded by a wedge-shaped edge. Typically, cross-peen hammers are used in finishing work, including forging and riveting applications, and require some expertise. They are especially appreciated in manufacturing those products requiring the accuracy provided by the wedged end while the hard steel of the head resists chipping.
