Measuring & Layout Tools

We all have learnt how to measure objects with a ruler at school, but when it comes to construction and design, more advanced tools are required to make precise measurements. For small distances up to 96 inches, engineers and builders might use a straight edge ruler that can also help to check the symmetry of lines. Another common measuring tool is a tape measure which is basically a metal ruler that rolls out, with the maximum length of 33 ft. It is easy to use and very compact, so it can even be clipped to the belt and carried along.

For long distances, there are such professional devices as a tape reel and measuring wheel. The former features a fiberglass or nylon tape that has marking on both sides; it comes either in a closed case or with a handle and a pointed stake and is perfect for uneven surfaces. The latter is constructed from a calibrated wheel with a handle and can measure the distance up to 10,000 ft. This tool calculates the distance while being rolled from the initial to the end point. Finally, the most modern measuring device is a laser tape measure which provides highly accurate measurements using optics and physical properties of a laser.
