Flat Washers

Flat washers are thin and small plates with a hole in the middle, which are usually coupled with threaded fasteners. Despite their simple appearance, these parts are far from being insignificant and, actually, they fulfill several functions, depending on their shape and material. Steel flat washers are among the most common types and are mainly used to increase the load surface, distributing the force applied to the fastener and ensuring a better grip in the long run. Also, they prevent the fastener from damaging the surface when excessive strength is applied. Finally, they can also serve as spacers.

In the most common design, the outer diameter is almost twice larger than the inner diameter, although there are several exceptions. For example, fender washers feature a small inner diameter if compared to the outer one. They provide improved load distribution and can be used to better the fitting in the case of damaged holes.
