A hand saw is a never dying classic of manual tools. This lightweight tool always remains useful when you need to quickly do some small backyard or household cutting and there is no need for a large cumbersome chainsaw. A properly chosen manually-driven saw can cope with a host of tasks that require precision. Though looking pretty much straightforward, the hand saw still offers versatility so that you can pick just the right type of tool to match your needs.

The hand saw is mainly targeted at cutting soft materials and is widely used for woodworking, carpentry, household and DIY projects. It cuts using a serrated metal blade or a wire with an abrasive edge. Varying the saw length and size and picking the right number of teeth per inch of the blade (TPI) allows the user to choose the type of a hand saw that is perfectly suited for a specific application. Lower TPI means that the blade has fewer but larger teeth that will cut through softer materials, while higher TIP with smaller teeth ensures great results when working with harder materials and/or for producing fine cuts.

The primary factor when choosing the hand saw is the tool’s cutting type. According to teeth shape, there are two basic types: crosscut and rip saws. Other types include coping, compass, keyhole, jab and hacksaws. A crosscut saw cuts across the grain of wood. The teeth on the blade are angled so as to make a cut with one edge and push away the sawdust with the other. The rip saw cuts the wood along the grain and has coarser teeth. The crosscut saw cuts in both push and pull directions, while the rip saw works in one direction only. The hacksaw is a light-duty tool commonly offered in bow shape with a long thin blade.

The coping saw is a U-shaped thin-blade tool ideal for making accurate contoured cuts. Keyhole, compass, and jab saws are thin wedge blade saws that are used for cutting rough holes for pipes and fittings in plywood or drywall. Thanks to their thin blade, these saws can operate in tight places. Jab saws have a sharp tip that allows you to start cutting through the wood without having to drill the hole first. Due to great pressure applied on the hand saw, the blades might often bend, while inappropriate maintenance can cause rusting. Replacing old blades is easy and affordable with our range of durable stainless steel blades.
