Rivet nuts are the fasteners that can get you out of trouble in many situations, for example, with the materials that cannot be welded or are unsuitable for tapping. Hence, such hardware is useful in projects involving plastic, fiberglass, nylon, copper, and brass, among others. They are largely used in automotive, marine, aerospace, and electronic applications. Typically, rivet nuts are tubular and have an internal thread for screws or pins. In comparison with many other types of fasteners, rivet nuts are quite practical and easy to install. They just require pre-drilled holes and are especially suitable when the working surface has difficult access to one side.
Though rivet nuts follow a general design scheme, details may differ even significantly, depending on the applications. For example, the rivets with a wide front-side flange strengthen the hole and prevent the nut from falling inside. Other styles include thin or thick walls and wedged heads; the latter ensures a firm hold in the material, preventing the rivet from turning.
