The thread pitch is one of the most significant characteristics of threaded fasteners and holes. If the nut does not match the screw pitch, it is impossible to secure the fastener, and the functioning or safety of the application is jeopardized. Screw pitch gauges are precision tools specifically designed to measure this crucial parameter. A typical gauge of this type consists of a bunch of metal sheets, called blades, each carrying a ridged border. The ridged profiles are shaped following a precise progression which can comply with either SAE or metric standards.
Typically, such gauges are used in combination with a caliper and a table of threads, also known as thread identifier. The caliper is used to measure the largest diameter of the fastener while the table indicates the range of tolerances for that specific diameter. Finally, the thread is matched with the most appropriate blade profile for exact measurement. While these products are classified as precision tools, they deliver a very reliable approximation.
