Work benches can be used in numerous work environments and come in handy for gardening, woodworking, metalworking, electronics, laboratory, and other jobs. Serving as a flat and steady surface on which the manual work is performed, work benches will be useful in a garage, automotive service shop, back yard, etc. Size and design of these work stations may vary depending on the type of a job, work space requirements, and personal needs of the user.

Despite its name, the work bench is actually a specialized table that provides a designated area of work in your workspace. Featuring a flat rectangular surface, the work bench is well-suited for spreading out your work piece along with all the necessary equipment and parts. Apart from letting you effectively organize your tools, the workbenches are used for fixing a work piece to the surface. Featuring a set of practical built-in clamps, work benches let you immobilize objects for shaping, cutting or sanding them. Work benches can be made of various materials, though wood and lightweight metal are the most common of them.

Though varying in design depending on your specific application purposes, most of the work benches feature provisions for storing, mounting, and accessing your tool collection. Thus many work stations have built-in shelves and drawers that can be positioned above or under the work surface. Spacious and easy to access drawers and shelves can accommodate an entire array of tools, keeping them neatly organized and ready for use. Some workbenches may also include spaces designed for hanging bulkier tools. Shelves, drawers, storage rails, and hangers are usually configurable to allow you to customize the work station.

Choosing the work bench, it is necessary to consider a number of parameters. Among them are the comfortable height required for seated or standing jobs, the size of the work surface, the need of power supply, ventilation hood, etc. A multi-purpose work bench that can be utilized for a range of manual jobs is the most commonly used one. These benches are compact, light and collapsible, usually featuring a tabletop printed grid, ruler, and a protractor for easy and convenient measurements. Folding design allows for storage in tight areas. These lightweight portable work stations boast total weight capacity of about 200 lbs.
